I think that the kids, epically scout, need to learn to appreciate Atticus more. They seem to take him for granted, and they don't really know him all that well. I think that Atticus is also at fault here, because he keeps so much from his kids. Miss. Maudie also had no place in telling the kids information that Atticus withheld from them.
As Jem learned, it's important to be respectful to everyone. I think that the white camellia in the box was mrs. Dubose's way of saying that she understood Jem and his motives; I don't believe it was to spite him. I also think that Jem was kind in reading to Mrs. Dubose in her dying days.
