TKAM CHAPTERS: 14,15,16,17,18,19
In chapter 14, Scout is laying in bed and discovers dill underneath it. He says he ran away from home because his mother and new dad werent being nice to him and treating him poorly. Jem tells Atticus and they bring him food and he eats and then gets into bed. Afterwards he climbs into scouts bed to talk about things. I think that Dill is lying because I think he might just not like his new dad or feel jealous of him..In chapter 15, Heck Tate comes to Atticus's house to talk about the Tom Robinson trial nearing, and that he must be moved to the maycomb prison. The part that confused me was when all the kids followed Atticus into town and when they see him sitting in front of the jail they noticed a group of men come out of 4 vehicles and they are telling Atticus to move. When he refuses scout comes running out and notices Mr. Cunningham, the father of walter and tells him to tell walter she says hey. I didnt understand why these men wanted Atticus to move in the first place? I think this was an example of unreliable narrator because it was confusing what she was saying. In chapter 16 the trial starts and Jem, Scout and Dill all watch the trail from the balcony thanks to Rev. Sykes. They can see the whole room and the judge is Judge taylor. In chapter 17 Heck Tate is questioned and just says that Mayella tells him she was raped by Tom Robinson and when he sees her she is beaten badly. When Bob Ewell is called up to the stand he says he saw Tom Robinson raping her and Atticus asks both of them if they called for a doctor and they said no. Bob Ewell stated that it was not needed and he didnt have enough money but I think he should of called a doctor or if Tom really raped her wouldnt you want to call a doctor to make sure she was okay and nothing was broken, etc? Also he asks Mr. Ewell to write his name and he noticed hes a lefty, and the bruise was on the right side of her so a person who is left handed is more likely to affect someone on the right side of Mayellas face.In chapter 18 Mayella is called up and she talks about how she asked Tom Robinson to bust up a dresser for her and she offered him a nickel. After this she claims he grabbed her from behind and started taking advantage of her. Atticus questions why she didnt put up a better fight because Tom Robinson only has one good arm and how the children didnt hear her screams. He tries so hard to make her admit that it was her father that beat her, not Tom Robison but she doesnt crack. Mayella is so afraid of her dad that she wont even turn him in. He has her so brainwashed that she thinks he'll probably kill her. In chapter 19 when Tom Robinson is called up to the stand he testifies that he always walked by the Ewell's house every day and did odd jobs for Miss Mayella all the time. He tells them on this night that Mayella told Tom she had saved money and told the children to go buy icecream and then when she asked him to get a box down from a dresser she grabbed his legs and asked him to kiss her. Tom left cause he was so scared and ran for so long. The prosecutor forces Tom to admit that even with one hand he has the strength to choke somebody. Tom says he feels sorry for Mayella which is nothing a black person should say about a white woman or white peopel for that matter. In this trial we all know the truth but Tom will lose because of his skin color.
