TKAM CHAPTERS: 20,21,22,23,24,25

In this chapter I dont understand why Mr. Dolphus pretends to be an alcoholic. I understand he prefers blacks over whites but why would he have to pretend hes a heavy drinker? Next Atticus says a speech to the courtroom about how Tom Robinson is innocent but I dont think its going to work because during this time, no matter what anybody said, whites were better than blacks. Theyre could of been cold hard evidence and people still would of said he was guilty. In chapter 21, they come to the conclusion that the jury says that Tom Robinson is guilty. Most knew this was the outcome again, because of the racial discrimination in this time period. In chapter 22 Jem is very upset because of the outcome of the verdict. The next day though, the black people of maycomb give the finches so much food in thanks of his trying to help Tom Robinson. At the end, Miss Stephanie tells the children that Bob Ewell spat on Atticus and wanted revenge. Why would Bob do this when he won the trial? It was Atticus's job to defend Tom Robinson, not a choice. In chapter 23 everyone is worried about bob ewells threat except atticus. He says hes just saying that because he made him look like a fool in the courtroom and that he wont do anything after this threat. Atticus has made an appeal for Tom but if he loses then he goes into the electric chair because that is the punishment for rape in Alabama. At the end it made me think. Jem says boo doesnt come out of his house because he does not want to. I think that since the kids are growing up they realize that its not that hes crazy or anything like that, its just that he simply wants to stay at home. In chapter 24, Scout is presented more as a women when she is wearing a dress to help calpurnia bring the tea out to the ladies. Aunt Alexandra offers her to sit with them and talk and I think this part of the book represents scout growing up. In chapter 25, we find out Tom Robinson has died, most likely from suicide from trying to escape and a huge article is wrote about an "innocent mans death." To me it is sad that Tom Robinson had to die for him to be claimed "innocent." It just shows that during this time period a white mans word always overruled a black mans word.
