I learned that the kids are oblivious to the fact that the rest of the townspeople is racist and believes that Tom's word against the Ewell's. He has stated a case that makes more sense than the Ewell's but he is African American. Also, I was surprised by the amount of food that African American community gave Atticus for representing Tom was astounding. He was highly respected because of not backing down and for fighting for him.
