TKAM Chapters 15-17

Throughout these chapters we realize that Atticus is actually very caring towards Tom Robinson and he isn't only participating in this case because he was assigned to it but also because he truly does believe that he is an innocent man and that the Ewell's are just out to get him. Atticus is risking everything by defending a black man accused of rape but he continues to do so anyway because he knows it's the right thing to do and he wants to show his kids that you need to stick up for what you believe is right. Throughout the case, the reader is given the impression that Bob Ewell was the one to physically beat and take advantage of his own daughter, not Tom Robinson. I believe this to be true because he had discovered that his daughter had feelings for a black man and he found this unacceptable so he punished her by doing so. Although we as readers find this to be very disturbing, Bob Ewell may think this is the proper thing to do because he thinks he is protecting his daughter and doing what's best for her by sending this innocent man to jail.
