TKAM Chapters 10-11

In chapter 10, Jem and Scout feel as if their dad isn't as "cool" as all the other fathers because of his old age. Instead of hunting or fishing like the other men in the town, he reads. However, when they find out that he used to be referred to as the "One-shot Finch" they realize how lucky they are and how cool he actually is to be able to shoot a rabid dog from far away without his glasses in the first shot. The kids wonder why Atticus never told them about his hidden talent. In chapter 11, Mrs. Dubose a sick, cranky old lady is introduced. Jem is told to be a gentleman to her but when she says that his father is no better than the "niggers and trash he works for" Jem loses his temper and destroys her camellia bushes. As a punishment, Jem must go to her house everyday for a month to read to her and Scout accompanies him. She slowly dies a little more each day and a little after Jem's month is up, Mrs. Dubose passes away and they discover that she was a morphine addict. She leaves Jem a box with a single white camellia in it. I wonder what this means. Jem takes it in a negative way as if she is going to haunt him but I feel as if it is a symbol that she has forgiven him.
