To Kill a Mocking Bird Ch. 1

Chapter one of To Kill a Mockingbird explains the setting and the tone of the book very well and in an organized way that moves the plot along. One of the first examples is the sentence, "Maycomb County had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself." In this quote is the saying there is nothing to fear but fear itself, which was said by Franklin Roosevelt during his presidency in 1933. Saying that Maycomb County was recently told that, shows that it is close to 1933. Also it sets the tone for the book because it reveals how different people who were different or didn't follow the tradition were given a bad reputation, such as the  Radleys. In chapter one, it says that they had closed doors and shutters, and "closed doors meant illness or cold weather only" and they didn't go to church, so they were different. The discrimination is shown through Miss Stephanie Crawford as she gossips. Also another thing that set the tone was when the incident of Boo Radley stabbed his father, but was not contained in jail, but in the courthouse basement, because the sheriff didn't have the heart to put him in jail with Negros. This example shows racial discrimination. So I believe that this book will be very good at providing imagery to help understand the story making it a good book and I look forward to reading more.
