To Kill a Mockingbird Chapters 1-3

In chapters 2 and 3, I was shocked to see how schoolteachers were back then.  When the author said that Miss Caroline Fisher, the first grade teacher at Maycomb's school, told the narrator she could not read nor write at home anymore, I stopped reading for a second or two.  A teacher forbidding a student from learning outside of school?  Today, teachers encourage students to expand their studies in any way possible.  I had expected Miss Caroline to congratulate the narrator on her success, but instead she treated it as a disease that must be gotten rid of.
